IP Rating

LED Lighting IP and Waterproof Rating

The "IP Rating" or "International Protection Rating" or "Ingress Protection Rating" codifies the level of protection that electrical appliances (like LED light bulbs) provide against the intrusion of solids and liquids (dust and water,) through accidental contact.

A product’s IP rating is expressed as “IP##” with "#" being numbers e.g. IP65

The level of protection against solids is denoted by the first number. This measures the protection against solid matter like dust and dirt. The second number denotes the protection against harmful ingress of liquids like water.

A higher number shows a greater level of protection. In carpeted areas for example, it is suitable to have bulbs with a lower ratings. Lights with higher IP ratings are better suited for areas with more exposure – in industrial and commercials zones like hospitals or factory and warehouse environments.
